Get to know the Therapist
Mike Desmond
Hello, I am Mike, a BABCP accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and EMDR practitioner.
Qualifications and Training
In my thirties I completed a degree in Psychology and then a further degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy. While training I undertook placements in substance misuse, a hospice and MIND. I then started in private practice. I then completed a PGDip in CBT. This gave me the professional accreditation necessary to work in the NHS. I have worked in NHS Talking Therapies for eight years where I provide therapy and supervise qualified and trainee therapists. While working in the NHS I have trained in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and completed specialist training in PTSD with The Oxford Centre for Anxiety Disorders and Trauma.
Experience
From training placements, to private practice and my time in the NHS I have worked with every person type and many different problems. I now specialize in PTSD, Depression, Low Self-Esteem and anxiety disorders; Panic, Social Anxiety, Health Anxiety, Worry and OCD.
Therapeutic Approach and Philosophy
Cognitive therapy is rooted in Stoic philosophy, recognising that maladaptive or traumatic past experience can shape a thinking style that is self critical, fearful, anxious or depressive. CBT provides extensively researched treatments for these. These protocols are informed by developmental psychology, neuroscience and cognitive psychology. EMDR augments the treatment of PTSD.
The therapeutic relationship is central in all therapies. My Counselling and Psychotherapy degree included a certificate in Person Centred Counselling. Central to this is offering clients warmth, empathy and authenticity. I strive to provide these throughout therapy
A Sense of the Therapist’s Personality
Bloody hell, It’s all very serious isn’t it? Distressed clients, therapists with years of training. Well yes it is serious but working through a client’s history, linking this to current problems and using our pooled knowledge to overcome these is fascinating. You may not believe it now but therapy can be not only enlightening (for both client and therapist) but it can be fun. All the training in the World is useless without inquisitiveness and enthusiasm. I promise to bring these to every session.
