Get to know the therapist
Patricia Brown
I am a BACP Accredited Psychotherapist and a BABCP Accredited CBT Therapist
Hello, my name is Patricia and I have been working as a therapist for 20 years. I am a qualified Integrative Counsellor specialising particularly in Psychodynamic Therapy. This type of therapy can help people understand how their childhood has shaped their development in terms of thoughts and emotions in their internal world.
I am qualified in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which focuses on identifying negative thought patterns and behaviours and then encouraging change.
I am qualified in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), which can help the processing and healing from significant life events, including trauma.
I am a qualified Mindfulness Teacher, delivering this either in Groups or on a one-to-one basis. Mindfulness can be helpful to encourage people to be more in the present moment and less in the past or in the future. The work is about noticing what is present: thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and using gentle guidance to accept what is present in any one moment without pushing, pulling and avoiding.

Diploma in Counselling & Psychotherapy from the Counselling & Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB)
Diploma in Clinical Supervision from the CPPD Counselling School London
Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy from the London College of Clinical Hypnotherapy
Postgraduate Diploma in Evidence Based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy from The University of East Anglia
EMDR Certification from the EMDR Association UK and Ireland
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) Certificate of Competence to teach MBCT from The Oxford Mindfulness Foundation
Therapeutic approach
Sometimes I might work incorporating a combination of the above, this will all depend on you and what you need in that moment. Quite often, people will enter into treatment not really knowing what they want, or there is so much that the process can be overwhelming. The first step is identifying that some change is required; the second step is reaching out. I offer a space of compassionate listening, understanding and encouragement for you to be the person you want to be. In turn, you will become your own compassionate listener and encourager, and you will understand yourself better.
It is important to me to continue my professional development and keep up to date with relevant material. I attend regular training and retreats for Mindfulness keeping my own personal practice.
Experience
I began my training wondering what I was going to do with my life. I started a 10-week initial course for Counselling and was hooked. I have never looked back.
I began volunteering in a care home for people showing early signs of Dementia. I would speak to people on a 1-1 basis and sometimes in a group about their emotional difficulties coming to terms with their illness. After a couple of years, I moved on to volunteering at a local hospice. I would counsel the family members of the residents in the hospice. Both volunteering roles gave me a perspective of life and death, and I am forever grateful to those patients whom I learned a great deal from in my early years of training.
I have since worked for a Mental Health Charity Mind as a volunteer counsellor and later became Manager of the Counselling Service. I now work for the NHS Talking Therapies, and I am in Private Practice.
